The median of daily nutrient intake in the 1992/1993 school children and adolescents of the Djakarta Nutrient Survey (DS) is assessed. In the DS nutrient intake of the individuals was assessed and compared with the nutrient intake of the 1972/1973 (1973/1974) DS. The mean intakes of dietary fat, cholesterol, vitamins A, B6, B12 and C and minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous were significantly lower for the children and adolescents in the 1992/1993 DS as compared with the 1972/1973 DS. Energy and protein intakes were significantly higher in the 1992/1993 DS. The results also indicate that in spite of the lower median nutrient intake, the intake of fat has increased from 15% to 20%. It is concluded that the increase of energy intake in the children and adolescents in the 1992/1993 DS is partially due to a compensatory increase of fat intake. However, the major factor for this increase is the higher protein intake. The decrease in the nutrient intake during the past decades cannot be explained only by a decrease in energy intake. Therefore, other factors such as lower nutrient intake from the diet, improved public health, migration and changing dietary habits cannot be excluded.Q:
